A Beacon Nestled in the Hills

It may look unremarkable, maybe hard to detect at first glance, but each day on my way to work at the Battell Chapel, after driving up and down hills and valleys, I know I am close when the steeple makes an appearance, nestled among the hills. On a sunny morning, if the light hits the weathervane just right, the reflection serves as a signal; its meaning is up to the viewer. For me, it sits atop a historic meetinghouse, symbolizing a safe and welcoming space for anyone who walks though its doors and a steadfast community of people dedicated to serving and spreading love. The meetinghouse and Battell Chapel house groups of worshippers, activists, fitness-lovers, writers, dancers, singers, yogis, avid book-devourers, musicians, theology-studiers, grievers, conservationists, bird-lovers, and volunteers working to alleviating suffering. I know I’ve missed many groups, but being in community is at the core. From my desk, I write with gratitude for the existence of such places and for colleagues and community that support the work of beacons like this, nestled among the hills.
